December 29, 2012 - Croatia 10 Kuna Commemorative. The Croatian National Bank is the central bank of the Republic of Croatia. This 10 Kuna note was issued in 2004 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the bank. Like all central banks around the world, the main objective of the bank is to maintain price stability in Croatia. The central bank was established by the Constitution of Croatia which was passed by the Croatian Parliament on 21.12.1990 but I am not sure why this note was issued in 2004. This note is signed by the Governor Zeljko Rohatinski. This note has the similar design to the previous 10 Kuna (P38 - dated 2001) issued, however an additional print of a large 10 is added to the watermark area on the right of the note (obverse). This note is dated 30.05.2004.

December 28, 2012 - Sweden Ten Krone, Dated 1968 P56 Commemorating 300th Anniversary of Sveriges Riksbank. Sveriges Riksbank is the central bank of Sweden. The bank is also sometime known as Riksbanken or Swedish National Bank or Bank of Sweden. The Riksbank began it operations in 1668 and is the world's oldest central bank. The bank's motto is "Herefore strenght and safety". Looking at countries like Ireland, Greece and Italy, perhaps this is the reason why the Swedish did not want to be part of the EU common currency!

December 24, 2012 - Philippines 50 Piso 4-Uncut Sheet Commemorative, celebrating 15 Years of Bangko Sentral Ng Philippines (BSP) 1993-2008. The BSP was established on 3.1.1949 and rechartered on 3.7.1993, pursuant to the provision of the 1987 Philippines Constitution and the new Central Bank Act 1993. Despite this was issued for this purpose, no overprint or logo was added to the note. This note is dated 2008 featuring the portrait of Sergio Osmena, the first speaker of the Philippines Assembly. The main feature on the back is the National Museum. Interesting about this folder is that it added an interesting trivia to it - "There are 16 soldiers on the obverse of the bill (banknote). Think outside the box and find them". Have fun! MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL.

December 20, 2012 - Thailand 100 Baht Commemorative note. This note was issued on 27.7.2012 to commemorating the 60th Birthday of Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn (5th cycle Birthday Anniversary. 10M pieces issued .

December 16, 2012 - Kenya 200 Shillings Commemorative Note (P46). This note celebrates the country 40 Years of Independence 1963-2003 from the British.

December 15, 2012 - Hungary 1000 Forint 2000 Millennium Commemorative (P185). Like many countries around the world, Hungary in 2000 released a 1000 Forint celebrated the Millennium. The design of the note is the same as the 1000 Forint issued in circulation then but with the word 'Millennium' in red added to the bottom left corner. Little has changed for the design of this note since then except that those issued most recently including either a silver or gold metallic strip towards the left side of the note.

December 12, 2012 - The Philippines 100 Piso 2012 Commemorative. This is a 4-Uncut sheet of 100 Piso issued to commemorate 100th Anniversary of Famous Masons in the Philippines (Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Manson - Philippines). Whilst the commemorative are related to the famous locals, it also included one foreigner, General Douglas MacArthur, Commander-in-Chief USAF (Far East).

December 9, 2012 - Fiji 2000 Millennium Commemorative Issue (P102). Here I have added the following notes to my Fiji Millennium single note circulating issue; -
1) Two dollars single note folder issue; and
2) Two dollars 2 Uncut pair folder issue.
According to the folder, here are some of the interesting information/facts about Fiji and this note: -
a) First country in the world to welcome the 2000 Millennium, and is also the last to farewell the sunset of the old millennium;
b) First in the world to issue a millennium banknote (date of release unknown to me);
c) First commemorative note ever issued by Fiji;
d) One million F$2 printed and were issued in singles (436,000 pieces including single and folder), 2 Uncut (100,000 sheets), 20 Uncut (15,000 sheets) and 32 Uncut (2,000 sheets).
The note is printed with a special prefix of 2K. I am wondering if any replacement prefix is used. In addition to this, a F$2000 note was also issued, and no, I do not have this high value note, but I am aiming to find one for my collection.
Footnote 1: Since 31.12.2010, Fiji is no longer the first country to see the sun. Samoa (Western Samoa) shifted it's time zone by moving forward one day on the 31.12.2010 to get into line with New Zealand and Australia, and became the first country to see the sun everyday. The purpose for this switching was purely for commercial and economic benefits. Instead of one day behind, Samoa is now 1 hour ahead of New Zealand and 3 hours ahead of Australia. Also prior to that on 8.9.2009, the country also switched it driving system from the right to left side for the same reasons. The last time a country did that was Sweden and that took place on 3.9.1967, also switched from the right to the left side.

December 8, 2012 - Barbados $100 1997 Commemorating note. This note was issued to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Central Bank of Barbados. The note has the same design as previous issues, except that it has the commemorative text imprinted on the left side of the note - "To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Central Bank of Barbados". Unfortunately, this note that I have is only in VF condition. It appears that finding one in UNC condition may not be esay. Standard catalogue listed this with a market value of US$155 in UNC condition.

December 6, 2012 - Djibouti -1997 Two Thousand Francs. This note was reportedly to be a Commemorating issue, celebrating the country 20th Anniversary of Independence.

December 3, 2012 - Macedonia F.Y.R.O. 100 Denar (P20) with 2000 overprint Commemorative. This note was issued to celebrate the Millennium year 2000. This is the last of the 15 nations that in 2000 released banknotes for this unique and special occasion. Collecting Millennium notes can be very interesting but also frustrating especially some of these notes issued in 2000 are not just getting harder to find, but can be very expensive too and that is why my millennium collection is not complete yet and it will never be, especially for those large uncut sheet 'wallpaper' type. I hope you have better luck than me.

December 2, 2012 - Macao 100 Patacas Commemorative note. Like the one issued by Bank of China (Hong Kong Branch), this note was also issued to celebrate the bank's 100 years of it's inception. According to the bank's website, 3.0 million pieces were printed but not less than 1.0 million pieces were sold to the public at MOP 150 each. Is than means that the rest were retained or handed out as gifts to guests, business associates or staffs of the bank etc? So far, I have only sighted two prefixes, ie MO and BOC. Are there more?

December 1, 2012 - Slovakia 2000 Millennium Commemorative set. Like few countries around the world, Commemorative notes were issued in 2000 to welcome the 2000 Millennium era, and I must say that majority of us would only have once in a life time to witness this celebration. Here, I have uploaded a full set of Slovakia notes originally issued between 1993 to 1995 with overprint logo in silver and gold (5000 Korun only) colours to celebrate this special occasion. As far as I know, Slovakia is the only nation that released the commemorative set in full, whilst others only issued either single or two notes sets for this special occasion. In all only 15 countries released banknotes to celebrate the 2000 millennium.

November 25, 2012 - Honduras 20 Lempiras commemorative note, dated 30.3.2000 (P83). This note was issued for two purposes - a) to celebrate the 2000 Millennium year, and b) the country's Central Bank 50th Anniversary. You don't find many banknotes nowadays that issued with more than one commemorative purposes.

November 21, 2012 - Philippines 500 Piso Commemorative. This note commemorates the 45th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of Asian Development Bank. The meeting was held in Manila Philippines between 2-5 May 2012. Whilst we note that Philippines has released full set of new design of notes in 2010, this commemorative note was issued with the overprint on the previous issue. It appears that there are still plenty of stock left for this denomination and what a best way to clear them. Quantity, ten millions pieces issued.

November 18, 2012 - Colombia 10000 Pesos Oro Dated 1992 (P437), 1993 and 1994 (both P437A). The 1992 print was issued to commemorate the Quincentennial of Columbus' voyage to America on 12.10.1492. Two more reprints were later issued with the year dates of 1993 and 1994. The design of this note, in my opinion, has to be one of the best I have seen so far. On the front it has the portrait of a youthful women Mujer Embera (indigenous of Colombia). On the back, the design comprises of an antique world map, the ship that Cristobal Colon (aka Christopher Columbus) sailed to America, and native birds of Colombia. These birds (from left to right) are; great flamingo, andean condor, green honey creeper, andean cock of the rock, blue and yellow macaw, hotzin, scarlet ibis, yellow-hooded blackbird, metallic green tanager, white pelican, magnificent frigate bird, keel-billed toucan, baltimore oriole, scarlet macaw, yellow crowned parrot and red-capped cardinal. In all, 16 of these beautiful creatures displayed all on one tiny piece of paper. I really enjoy having this note. I like it so much that I bought all three of them and I hope you like it too. P/S..According to the SCWPM, one million pieces of the 1993 prints were stolen in 1994 (that's 10,000,000,000 Pesos Oro or 10 Billions Pesos Oro or today's value of approximately US$5.49 Millions).

November 17, 2012 - Cyprus Pounds set (pre Euro). Cyprus joined the EU in 2004, and on 01.01.2008 the Euro replaced the Cypriot pounds with a fixed exchange rate of 0.585274 Cypriot pound to one Euro dollar. Here I have uploaded a full set of Cypriot pounds used before the switch over. The notes posted here are the 1, 5, 10 (x2) and 20 pounds. The denomination of 20 pounds was the largest note used in the country prior to the Euro. Imagine, suddently from a 20 pounds note to a 500 Euro note circulating in the country! The 20 pounds note posted here is a Z prefix replacement note. I have listed Cyprus as part of Asia, just like Turkey.

November 11, 2012 - Hong Kong Bank of China (BoC) $100 Commemorative note 2012. This note celebrates the bank 100 year of establishment (5.2.1912). The bank originally started in 1905 when the last Chinese Imperial government established Daqing Hubu Bank and in 1908 changed it's name to Daqing Bank. Following the establishment of the Republic of China, the bank was then renamed Bank of China by the Nationalist Kuomintang government. After the Chinese civil war ended in 1949, the bank split into two operations, with one part of it's operation shifted to Taiwan. The Taiwan operation later changed it's name in 1971 and merged with the Taiwan Bank of Communication. The mainland operation remains unchanged. BoC, by market capitalisation, is the 5th largest bank in the world. The bank operates in 27 countries and employed staffs in excess of 380,000 worldwide. The BoC (Hong Kong branch) commenced it's operation in 1917 and was forced to closed temporary during the Japanese occupation in 1941 and then reopened in 1946 following the end of the war. In 1994, the BoC (HK) was granted the license in Hong Kong to issue banknotes in the territory. Two millions of notes printed (single, 3-Uncut and 30-Uncut) with no letter prefix, AA and AB prefixes.All notes posted here with serial numbers ended with 4s, ie 24, 24 and 54, what a lucky number, to me!

November 10, 2012 - Trinidad and Tobago $50, 50 Years of Independence Commemorative. This note is dated 2006 but was issued in 2012. This note has the same design as the recent T$50 issued except that the commemorative text is added "Celebrating 50 Years of Independence 1962-2012".

November 6, 2012 - Philippines 2000 Piso Unissued 2001 Folder Commemorative note. In 1998, the Central Bank of the Philippines released few notes to commemorate the country centennial of the first republic (1898 - 1998). Four notes were printed for this special occasion: -
* 100 Piso x 2, P188a & 188b - ND1998 and dated 1998 (commemorative overprint);
* 2000 Piso Folder P189 dated 1998 (new design); and
* 100000 Piso P190 dated 1998 (size 215mm x 315mm, world largest banknote ever issued).
However not until recently that collectors discovered that a similar design (2000 Piso dated 2001) of the P189 was also printed but smaller in size. To the local collectors, this note is known as the "Erap note" as it features the former President Josep 'Erap' Estrada's inauguration at the Barasoain Church in Bulacan on 30.06.1998 (13th President). It has been reported that this note was printed in 2000 and was meant to be put into circulation in 2001. However corruption charges impeachment hearings were already underway against the President Estrada then and he was eventually ousted from office on 20.1.2001, before even the notes were released. About 4.95 million pieces of these 2000 Piso were printed (99 boxes or 50,000 pieces each per box) and until recently, the central bank decided to demonetised them and destroyed all of it except one box. These 50000 pieces have been retained for historical, educational, numismatic and other purposes. Here I managed to get one for my own collection and it comes in a folder. Like they said, every banknote tells an interesting story.

November 4, 2012 - Denmark 2009-2011 Bridge Series. Uploaded here (update) are few more notes of the current bridge series. The notes that I have added are signed by Per Callesen (500 Krone) and Hugo Frey Jensen (200 and 500 Krone). Unfortunately these are not full sets. The 2009 Bridge series of notes beared the signatures of Nils Bernstein (full set), Torben Nielson (full set), Jens Thomsen (without 1000 Krone), Per Callesen (without 100 & 200 Krone) and Hugo Frey Jensen (without 100 Krone). All notes are countered signed by Lars Gerrild Sorensen. The collection of modern European banknotes is shrinking by the day simply because of the growing of the EU community.

November 3, 2012 - Philippines 50 Piso 2012 ASEAN Commemorative. This note celebrates the 45th year of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asia Nations). ASEAN was formed on the 8.8.1967 by the founding members of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand in Bangkok, Thailand. The aims of ASEAN includes accelerating economic growth, social progress, cultural development among its members, protection of regional peace and stability, and opportunities for member countries to discuss differences peacefully. Since then, the membership expanded to include Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. It's amazing that this country continues to issue Commemorative notes, like there is no end to it. This ASEAN commemorative is not even the latest issue. I got this at a very affortable price!

November 1, 2012 - Solomon Islands 1977 First Day Issue. This is a set of first day issue/commemorative of notes released in 1977. This set comprised of $2, $5 and $10. Each note is individual sealed in an envelope. In addition to the notes, it also comes with a set of proof coins of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 cents and $1 coins. This set was put together by the Franklin Mint, authorised by the issuing bank. The notes and coins are housed in a black album. All notes have matching serial numbers. Foot note: The $5 Silver proof coin is missing from this set. Buying this set of notes is cheaper than buying them individually.

October 27, 2012 -Paraguay 2000 Guaranies 2011 Polymer reprint. This time, the imprinter name and logo of G+D has been removed from the reverse of the note. This note is printed with letter prefix "C".

October 25, 2012 - Great Britain (Bank of England). Here I have added the remaining of the current Bank of England banknotes all signed by Chief Cashier Chris Salmon. The first note (£50) was issued on 2.11.2011. Here, the remaining denominations of £5, £10 and £20 all issued on the 12.9.2012.

October 21, 2012 - Congo Democratic Republic 500 Francs 2010 Commemorative note. Note issued to celebrate 50th Anniversary of Independence from Belgium. Independence day is celebrated on 30th of June. This specimen must be issued on purpose for collectors as it is very affortable.

October 20, 2012 - Belarus 2000 Millennium Commemorative set CS1 (10 notes). These notes were issued to commemorate the 2000 Millennium Year, and all notes are printed with the word 'Millennium' in red on the back (with the exception of 1, 5 and 10 Rubles). The designs of these notes are the same as those normal circulating notes (P21 - P30). Only 2500 sets issued at 18,090 Rubles per set (face value 16,686 Rubles). This set has a nice serial number of "aa 0000288".

October 18, 2012 - The Philippines Commemorative 100 Piso (P188) Centennial of First Republic 1898-1998. Four notes were issued to celebrate this special occasion, mainly the 100 pesos x 2, 2000 pesos (216mm x 133mm) and 100,000 Peses. The 100,000 Piso note is the largest banknote ever issued as it measured by 315mm x 215mm. Here I have added the 2 x 100 Piso to the 2000 Piso commemorative note that I already have.

October 13, 2012 - Argentina 100 Pesos ND21.09.2012 Commemorative note. Well, if you like history as well as politic, here is one note that you might be interested in. This note is issued to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the death of Marie Eva Duarte de Peron (1919 - 1952). Eva Peron (former First Lady of Argentina) was the second wife of President Juan Peron (1895-1974, President of Argentina 1946 to 1955 and 1973 to 1974). I could be wrong, but if you do not know the brief history of Argentina, you would have heard the song, 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina' sang by Julie Covington in 1976. Obviously this song (and also the 1978 musical play "Evita") made her world famous then. At least this is how I came about knowing her briefly. Following the released, this song was banned in Argentina. During the Falkland war between Argentina and Britain, the British military band played this song sarcastically in Falkland Islands. It should also be interested to know that this song was also banned in the Philippines during the Ferdinand Marcos regime. If you like history, you got to get one for your own collection. This note is Series "A" with one million pieces issued commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Death of Eva Duarte de Pero.

October 11, 2012 - Barbados B$20 Commemorative. This is a commemorative note issued on 15/08/2012 to celebrate the Bank's 40th Anniversary. The design of this note is the same as those currently in circulation with some added features and additional securities. The note is overprinted with “40 years” along with the Bank’s logo over the watermark area on its front. A large “40” numeral, the annotation “40th Anniversary of the Central Bank of Barbados” and the dates “1972 – 2012” are also imprinted on the reverse. A small watermark-type image of a Pride of Barbados flower is located to the right of the map of Barbados. The note also has a wider and less reflective security thread than those previous issued. First prefix is D79 and I have up loaded a repeater here with D79 079079 note.

October 7, 2012 - Samoa (Western) 50 Tala Commemorative (Hybrid note). This note was issued to celebrate Samoa's 50th Independence from New Zealand. Independence Day is celebrated on the first of January. The design of this note is similar to those initial issue in 2008 but with the 50th Anniversary of Independence logo added on the front of the note. This note is signed by Faumuina Tiatia Faaolatane Liuga (Minister of Finance) and Ms Maiava Atalina Ainuu-Enari (Governor), who is also the country first female Governor. This note that I have uploaded is a replacement note with prefix ZZ. Also please look at the bottom margin of the note for minor design changes on both front and back.

October 6, 2012 - Barbados full set all signed by Governor Dr Delisle Worrrell and all dated 1.5.2007. This set of notes were released in stages, with the first 3 denominations (B$2, B$5 and $10) were released in 2011 and the remaining notes ($20, $50 and $100) released in 2012. The last note to release was the B$50 note (August 2012). The designs of these notes had changed very little since it was first introduced in the early 70s, apart from the security features. It's good to collect banknotes in full set with same signature.

October 4, 2012 - Jamaica 2012 Commemorative full set. This set was released on 23.7.2012 to celebrate the country's 50th Anniversary of Independence (1962-2012). Independence day is celebrated on 6th of August each year. The design on the front of each notes remains unchanged, except with the national logo (Doctor Bird) for the 50th Anniversary of Independence is added to the right side of each note. The reverse side of all the notes have been replaced by a group of children from the Central Branch Primary School (c. 1962) with the national motto theme "Out of Many, One People". This design was previously used on the $2 note that circulated between 1969 to 1994. The printers for this series are De La Rue and Giesecke & Devrient (J$100 only). All notes are signed by the Governor Brian Wynter (appointed since 1.12.2009). The J$5000 denomination remains a Hybrid banknote. If you look carefully on the note, the design on the J$5000 (reverse side) has altered to accommodate the polymer vertical strip, which separated the students into 2 groups. From the picture, you will see that the arm on the student (back row, first from the right) has been omitted. And also because of this, the hand on student's shoulder (second row from top, second from the right) looks a bit weird too.

October 1, 2012 - Samoa (Western Samoa) June 2012 reprints. Here I have uploaded 3 notes, reprinted from the initial issues of 2008. Only 3 denominations reprinted for general circuation at the moment - 5, 20 and 100 Tala (Hybrid). I can see some design changes on the 100 Tala Hybrid note on the lower margin of the note both front and back. The designs for the other two notes (5 and 20 Tala) look the same to me. All notes bear the signatures of Faumuina Tiatia Faaolatane Liuga (Minister of Finance) and Ms Maiava Atalina Ainuu-Enari (Governor), who is also the country first Central Bank female governor.

BANKNOTES FROM AROUND THE WORLD - SPECIMEN SET

A complete collection of Franklin Mint Banknotes From Around The World comprises of 16 sets of specimen notes or 72 individual notes with each set printed with matching serial numbers. All sets came with with a Certificate of Authentication. These notes were issued as collectible items at a price of US$14 per set (or GBP7 for the Northern Ireland sets). All notes were printed with a Maltese Cross as prefix, whilst the Dominican Republic set has both the Maltese Cross as prefix and suffix. These notes were released by Franklin Mint in conjunction with each respective Central/Commercial Bank and the banknote printer Thomas De la Rue. I have now managed to acquire few of these for my own collection and I have uploaded here for your viewing pleasure: -

September 25, 2012 - Tonga 1978 Franklin Mint Issue Specimen Set. This set comprises of 1, 2, 5 and 10 Pa'anga (PCS1 - P19b-P22b). This set is part of the Franklin Mint "Banknotes From Around The World" theme and was issued  in conjuction with the the Central Bank and Thomas de la Rue. All notes are printed with the Maltese Cross as prefix. Each set comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and the original issue price was US$14 per set.

September 22, 2012 - Swaziland 1974 issues, Franklin Mint Issue Specimen Set. August 25, 2012 - Kazakhstan Ten Thousand Tenge Hybrid note dated 2012. This is the largest denomination circulating in the country. Previous issue was releasted on July 2011 celebrating the country 20th Indepencence anniersary. This is a normal issue note.

August 22, 2012 - Thailand 80 Baht 2012. This note was issued on 9.8.2012 to commemorate the Queen of Thailand 80th birthday. The note is issued with a folder at an issue price of 120 Baht. Two million folders released for this special occassion.

100 Dollars, ND2011 P61

August 15, 2012 - The State of Jersey £100 Specimen commemorative note dated 2012 signed by Laura Rowley (Treasurer). This note was issued on 1.6.2012 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth The Second's Diamond Jubilee 1952-2012. This £100 (P37s) is the largest denomination currently issued by Jersey. I am not sure how many pieces were printed for this specimen issue, but it's good to have one in my collection.

August 10, 2012 - Northern Ireland Ulster Bank 20 Pounds note. This is another reprint of the current series and is dated 1.1.2010. This must be a very popular denomination of note in Northern Ireland as the last 2 reprints were dated 2007 and 2008. Like all previous modern issues, this note carried the security water mark of the bank's name. I personally find this security feature quite unique. Always enjoy collecting notes printed by this commercial bank.

20 Pounds, Dated 1.1.2010 PNL

August 6, 2012 - Northern Ireland Northern Bank Ltd Twenty Pounds. This is a reprint note and is dated 2009. The design of this note has changed slightly as compared to previous 2006 issue, including the deletion of the bank's 'N' logo. The Bank was established in 1809 and has since been bought and sold a few times. The Danske Bank (Danish Bank) took over the company from the NAB Group as at 1.3.2005.

August 3, 2012 - Taiwan 2011 $100 Commemorative 3-Uncut Sheet. This is the reprint of the first issue which was sold out. The first print was released on 6.1.2011. The reprint was due to popular demand by the locals as well as overseas collectors. The design of the note is still the same, however there are some minor changes on the design of the folder, including the colour of Dr Sun's portrait on the front cover. Issue price was T$500.

August 2, 2012 - Malaysia 2012 Forth Series circulating set. This set was issued on the 16.7.2012, with the exception for the 50 Ringgit circutaling note (non commemorative), which was first released on 15.7.2009. The set comprises of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 Ringgit. Both the 1 and 5 Ringgit are in polymer and for the first time since 1989, the 20 Ringgit is re introduced. I personally find that the colours for the RM10 and RM20 are bit confusing. I predict that they may change the colour for the RM20 at a later date, as traditionally, the RM10 is in red. A set of postage stamps were also released to celebrate this special occassion.

RM1, ND2012 PNL

August 1, 2012 - The State of Jersey £100 Dated 2012 signed by Laura Rowley (Treasurer). Here you are, it's been a long time waiting for this note. This is the third Diamond Jubilee note and was issued on 1.6.2012 to commemorate Queen Elizabeth The Second's Diamond Jubilee 1952-2012. This £100 is the largest denomination currently issued by Jersey. The cost for producing this issue was £256,000 and without knowing how many pieces were printed, I can't tell what would the the cost per unit. The law to issue this note was passed in Jersey Parliament with 34 votes in favour and 8 against. The image (portrait) of this note is called Equanimity and was designed by Chris Levine. Whilst many commemorative stamps and coins were minted for this special occassion, surprisingly only three notes have been issued for this Diamond Jubilee celebration, being The Royal Bank of Scotland (£10 note released on 23.5.2012), and then followed by Guernsey (£20, released 31.5.2012).
