15 January 2013 - The Year of the What??
Last year two banknotes issuing banks in Macao released a commemorative note of 10
Patacas each to celebrate the year of the Dragon. Ten million pieces each were
released by the two banks. The demands for these notes were so successful that
it was sold out on the third day of release. A reprint was later ordered and
released in the second half of the year to satisfy the overwhelming interest in
these notes, especially those collectors and dealers in China.
Well, we are now back again, and this year is the Year of
the Snake. The value is again 10 Patacas, and this time 20 million pieces each
will be issued and the locals will be restricted to order the notes via online
of 30 pieces each.
Whilst this is great to collectors, this is going to be a
yearly event until 2023 when it reaches a complete 12 animal years cycle. I
just hope that I can last that long, and to get a full set, as one has to wait
for almost 12 years to get them all. I am just wondering why they didn’t start
from the top of the animal cycles, with the Rats…..!!
As we all know that many Post Offices around the world
release countless postage stamps and coins to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New
Year, I believe that these 2 Macao
banks are the first in the world to issue legal tender banknotes to celebrate
such occasions.
Happy hunting if you are looking for these new notes. I know
I am, even though I am not that really happy about it.
