December 2011 Postings

M E R R Y    C H R I S T M A S    2 0 1 1

December 25, 2011 - Chile 1000 Pesos 2010 (11.5.2011) Polymer. This is a new design and replaced the previous 1000 pesos paper. This is the third polymer notes in the current Chiliean banknotes series. The other donominations in polymer are the 2000 and 5000 pesos. Both the 10,000 and 20,000 pesos are still printed on paper banknotes.

December 23, 2011 - Tunisia 10 Dinars x 2. With the recent Spring Uprising in the Arab World, I thought I better get some of these notes before it too late. As today is the last working day before the Christmas break, here I would like to take this opportunity to wish all my friends and visitors a Merry Christmas. Also it has been reported that Christchurch in New Zealand has been hit by a series of earthquake today. Barely 12 months ago, the city was almost destroyed by an earthquake. If you have experienced an earthquake before, no matter how minor it was, you will know the scarey feeling of it. My thoughts are with the people of Christchurch. If they can survived the first one, I am sure you will survive this one too.

December 18, 2011 - Serbia & Montenegro 1000 Dinara. My first note from that region since the end of the Yugoslav War (1991-1995). I got this via exchange from a collector in Slovenia. This is quite a nice note. The highest denomination is 5000 Dinara and I do not have one yet.

December 16, 2011 - The Royal Bank of Scotland. This is a five pounds note issued recently. This note is dated 21.11.2008, and signed by the Group CEO Stephen Hester. It is also interesting to note that this is also the date that Stephen Hester took over the Group CEO position from his predecessor Sir Fred Goodwin. The design of this note is the same as those previously issued. This is the first note issued by the bank since the Global Financial Crisis started in 2007 (aka Global Recession or Credit Crunch).

December 10, 2011 - Bhutan 100 Ngultrum. This is a commemorative note issued on the eve of the Royal Wedding between King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchue and Ashi Jetsun Pema Wangchuck (b.4.6.1990). The Royal Wedding took place on the 13.10.2011 with the main ceremony held at the Punakha Dzong (Palace of Bliss). This is also the second largest dzong structure in Bhutan. King Jigme Wangchue was born on 21.2.1980 and became King of Bhutan on 14.12.2006 following the adication of his father the former King Jigme Singye Wangchue. The note was issued at a price of 500 Ngultrums each or 5 times the face value.

December 8, 2011 - Indonesia - 20000, 50000 and 100000 Rupiah, a set of commemorative notes. According to the Jakarta Post, these notes were issued on 28.10.2011 to commemorate the Youth Pledge Day (Hari Sumpah Pemuda). The declaration of the Youth Pledge Day (one motherland, one nation and one language) by young Indonasian nationalists was first made on 28.10.1928. The designs of these notes are similar to those previous issues but with upgrade securities, such as rainbow printing, blind codes etc. The quantity issued for these notes are Rp20000 (7.6M), Rp50000 (103.5M) and Rp100000 (125.8M).

December 3, 2011 - Canada $100 dated 2011. This is the first of the Canadian polymer note (Frontier) series issued on 14.11.2011. The note was officially released into circulation by Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney at an event in Toronto Ontario, at the MaRS Centre. The next note to be released will be the $50 and that will be in March 2012. The remaining of the series, being the $20, $10 and $5 will be released by 2013. The new polymer notes series will eventually replace the current circulating Journey series, which was first introduced in 2001.

December 1, 2011 - England £50. Released on 2.11.2011. This is a new design of the English GBP50 and is also the first note signed by Chris Salmon since appointed as Executive Director, Banking and Chief Cashier on 1.4.2011. The reverse of the note depicts the portraits of Matthew Boulton (1728-1809) and James Watt (1736-1819). Boulton was a manufacturer and Watt was a Scottish Engineer. Both were business partner and were involved in the manufacturing of coins (Soho Mint) by adopting the latest technology available then for Britain (including the Royal Mint) and other countries. Well, technically, these two gentlemen were money makers!

November 2011 Postings

November 26, 2011 - Here I have re posted all the Denmark note issued between 2009-2011. The 2009-2011 Bridge series comes with at least 5 signature varieties. I am not sure if there are more. This series of notes are signed by the Board of Directors, namely Torben Nielson (full set), Nils Berstein (full set), Hugo Fry Jensen (1000 Krone), Per Callesen (1000 Krone) and Jens Thomsen (50 to 500 Krone). Again, I am not sure if all signatures are appeared on all denominations either. All notes are counter signed by Lars Gerrild Sorensen.

November 23, 2011 -  Indonesia 1000 Rupiah. This is a reprint of the 2000 series with year date of 2000/2001. The reference number for this note, according to the SCWPM is P141b. The 1000 Rupiah is currently the lowest banknote denomination circulating in the country and needless to say this is also a very affortable note to collect too. Cheap Cheap!

November 19, 2011 - Hungary 2008 prints. There is a birthday celebration in the family today (not mine) and so I thought I put up few more notes on my site today. Here I have added the notes of 1000 and 5000 Forint to the original post. The first two notes (500 and 2000 Forint) was first posted on 15/8/2011.

November 16, 2011 - Sweden 100 Krona. 2005 P66. A commemorating note issued to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the Tumba Paper Mill. In 1755, the Swedish National Bank established a paper mill called Tumba Bruk in Tumba, a town located on the outskirts of Stockholm. The purpose of this company was to manufacture all the Swedish banknotes required by the country.. In 2002, Tumba Bruk was sold to the current owner Crane & Co, a paper banknotes supplier. This 100 Krona commemorative note is rather a large note measuring 170mm x 92mm. Original issue price for this folder note was 150 Kroner. The folder is the size of the A4 paper.

November 11, 2011 - Barbados $50. I was lucky to get this replacement note at a very affordable price. This note is listed as Pick 40a (40r) and was issued in 1989. The Governor signature on this note is Dr Kurleigh King. I have previously saw this note listed on Internet auction site with asking price of US$260+. Of course, I didn't paid for this kind of asking price. It's cheaper than you thought.

November 8, 2011 - Kazakhstan 10,000 Tenge. Another commemorative note issued to celebrate the country’s 20th year of independence. The design of the note on the front is in vertical format. This note was released on 4.7.2011. Similar main features retained for the design of this note as pre previous note of same demonination issued, such as the "Kazak Eli ", the  Residence of the President of the country and the contours of the map of Kazakhstan territory. The note issued is inscripted with the following words "KAZAKHSTAN TAUELSIZDIGINE JYIRMA JYL" or "20 years of Independence of Kazakhstan", including the Independence Day of 20-year celebration logo. Quantity issued, 30,000,000 pieces.

November 4, 2011 - Cayman Islands 2010. A complete set of new notes released for general circulation on the 4.4.2011. These notes were released under section 18 of the Monetary Authority Law (2010 Revision). Previous laws were the 1971 Currency Law, then followed by the Currency Law of 1974, The Currency Law was then repealed and replaced by the 1983 Currency Law Revised. This is the forth series of notes issued by Cayman Islands and as such the "D" letter prefix. This series comprises of 6 notes - $1, $5, $10, $25, $50 and $100. All previous notes issued since 1971 are still legal tender in Cayman Islands. It should be noted that the first Cayman Islands currency was issued in 1971. Prior to that, they used Jamaican Dollars;

November 1, 2011 - Brunei 2011 "D" Series. Here I have posted 3 polymer commemorative notes all issued on the 18.7.2011. These notes were released for circulation to coincide with the celebration of the Sultan of Brunei's 65th birthday (dob 15.7.1946). These notes replaced the "C" series polymer notes which was first released in 1996 (still legal tender). Only 3 notes were released for this special occasion. It seems that nowadays, Central Banks around the world have a habit in releasing new banknotes to commemorating special events even there are no overprints or additional special texts imprinted on the notes. I have few spare sets for exchange at face value if interested.

October 2011 Postings

**** To my Indonesian collector friends, if you wish to exchange banknotes with me, please contact me. Thanks ****

October 30, 2011 - Singapore $2 Millennium note. Here I have posted two commemorative folder note sets. This is the $2 millennium note issued on 8.12.1999 to celebrate the Millennium year. Two folder varieties were issued with the following themes; "Silver hard folder - The New Millennium" and "Maroon hard folder - The Millennium Dragon". These folders were exclusively packaged and distributed by United Overseas Bank in Singapore and was sold for S$12.50 per folder. Whilst this note is more that 10 years old, I have these in my collection since the day it was released. This commemorative note is still plenty available in the market and recently I saw a set (3 notes without the folder) at a dealer shop selling in Singapore for S$21.00. After 10 years plus, it's still very affordable. Don't let others to fool you if they tell you this note is rare! Quantity issued = 5 million pieces.

October 25, 2011 - Dominican Republic 500 Peso Oro. This is a commemorative note issued in 1992 to commemorate the Quincentennial of the First Landfall by Christopher Columbus 1492-1992. Four notes (P139 to 142) were issued then to celebrate this special occasion in 1992, but this is the only note released that depict the famous explorer. Was Christopher Columbus (31.10.1451-20.05.1506) an explorer or simply just another European invader? You to decide!

October 22, 2011 - Singapore $10 (Polymer). This note was issued early this year and it has two tiny triangles (stealth fighters flying) printed on the back of the note just underneath the word 'Sports'. Same design as the previous issue except the extra triangles.

October 19, 2011. Tanzania 2011 Full set. Here I have up loaded a full set of notes all dated 1.1.2011. The denominations are 500, 1000, 2000, 5000 and 10000 shillings. These notes were released for circulation in early January 2011.

October 15, 2011 - Vanuatu 10,000 Vatu. Here I have uploaded a Vt10,000 polymer uncirculated note. This note was issued in 2010 to celebrate the country's 30th Anniversary of Independence. Since the released of this note, few collectors argued that this note should not be classified as commemorative as it has no commemorative texts or logo imprinted on the note. Well, what do they know? The folder comes with this note confirmed that. Please read the inside folder information yourselves. All these folder notes are hand signed by both the Governor and the Minister of Finance. Needless to say, no two notes are the same and that makes this note very unique! Quantity issued unknown to me, however I have been informed by a collector friend that only 100 pieces has been issued. I assume this could be right, after all both the Governor and the Minister of Finance have to personally sign each note, unless someone can show me one with serial number higher than 100. This note posted has a low serial number of AA10 000 008. A very nice number for a very special occasion! Other serial numbers worth collecting including the single digit notes are #10, #18, #28, #30 (30th Anniversary), #38, #88 (double lucky), the last note #100 (yet to be confirmed) and whatever what your lucky number is.

October 12, 2011 - Trinidad and Tobago $100. This is a commemorative note issued in 2009 to celebrate the Commonwealth Head of Government Meeting (CHOGM, 27-29 November, 2009). The meeting was held in the capital city of Port of Spain and was chaired by the Prime Minister Patrick Manning who was then the head of the government of Trinidad and Tobago. CHOGM is a biennial meeting of all the heads of the commonwealth nations. The meeting is held in difference member state and is usually chaired by the President or Prime Minister of the host nation. The first CHOGM was held in 1971 in Singapore and a set of postage stamps were released to commemorate this event. The next meeting (21st) will be held in Perth Australia (28-30 October 2011) and will be chaired by the Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard. This is the third time Australia is staging this event and unfortunately only coins are issued to celebrate this special occasion. The meeting in 1971 lasted for 9 days and over the years it reduced to a week, 5 days and now to just 3 days. The topic of discussions varies from economy to election frauds, military coups etc. The Commonwealth nations comprise of 54 member States, with Fiji currently been suspended. Zimbabwe withdrew from the group in December 2003. The next meeting, after Perth, will be in 2013 in Sri Lanka.

October 8, 2011 - Belarus 20 Rouble, 2001. This is a commemorative note, commemorating the 10th anniversary of the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus (1991 to 2011). This folder note was issued on 1.1 2001 and limited to 5,500 folders. Issued price was 1200 Rouble. If you think you have paid too much for this note, don't worry, me too. Enjoy viewing the note.

October 4, 2011 - Kazakhstan 1000 Tenge. It seems that the landlocked Asian country of Kazakhstan has been releasing commemorative notes to celebrate few special occasions recently. Here I have posted a 1000 Tenge value note issued on 25.5.2011. This note is to commemorating the Chairmanship in the Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Conference held by Kazakhstan. The OIC organisation comprises of 57 member States and the event was held in the capital city of Astana between 28-30 June 2011.

October 1, 2011 - Solomon Islands Specimen Overprint (PCS1). This set of specimen notes was released in 1979 in a joint-venture with the Franklin Mint, Thomas De La Rue and the Solomon Islands Monetary Authority as part of the "Banknotes Around The World" series. All serial numbers of these notes are printed with a Maltese cross with matching serial numbers. Obviously these are numismatic products. The issued price then was USD$14 per set and it comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and an information card. Whilst this set of notes is more than 30 years old, they are by no means rare as there are still plenty available in the market. Pity that the dealers asking price for such set is so inconsistent. In addition to this set, other countries/commercial bank also released this "Maltese Cross" series, such as Tonga, Ghana, Bank of Ireland (Northern Ireland), Gibraltar, Sierra Leone and the Philippines etc.

September 2011 Postings

September 25, 2011 - Cayman Islands 2001 C/1 series P27 and P29. Today is a very sad day to me, and not a day that I would like to remember or looking forward to. In order to remember this day, I though I post two more notes (nothing in particular). Here I have uploaded two  notes from the Cayman Islands. This is the 2001 series with $5 and $50. Missing in this series are the $1 and $10. The $100 was not issued for this series.

September 23, 2011 - Mauritania 2004 Prints. Here I have posted 4 notes, with demoninations of 100, 200, 500 and 2000 Ouguiya. Missing from this series is the 1000 value.
September 21, 2011 - Costa Rica 1000 Colones. This is a dated 24.2.1999 and has a Pick reference number of P264c. I got this note via exchange with a great collector from the USA. The condition of this note is uncirculated.

September 17, 2011 - Gibraltar 2010 to 2011 issues. Here I have posted the remaining of the Gibraltar new series of notes, which was first released on 8/7/2010 with the £10 and £50. The remaining notes were released on 11/5/2011, which also included the £100 hybrid note.A full set comprises of £5, £10, £20, £50 and £100. The obverse designs of this series are all the same, whilst the reverse features either a famous landmark of Gibraltar or a historical event.

September 13, 2011 - Jamaica 1987 Commemorative set. Here I have posted a set of 4 notes with denominations of $1, $2, $5 and $10, issued in 1987 to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth The Second (June 2, 1953). Strange is that none of the notes have the portrait of the Queen to celebrate this special occasion. I supposed it's cheaper this way than to print new design of notes. Whilst I knowledge this set of notes are not rare, the one note that really caught my eyes is the $2 note which printed with the following words - "Out Of Many, One People". Now, you ask yourself, how true is that! All notes printed with this design ($2) have the same words printed on the reverse side of this note.

September 9, 2011 - Singapore $1,000. Today is the 12th anniversary for the release of the Portrait banknotes series. This note was first issued on 9.9.1999 and for the first time since 1967, the S$500 denomination was not included in the series, halleujah! This note is considered a high value note but not the largest in the land. This is a reprint and is signed by the country formal Prime Minister Mr Goh Chok Tong and this note is printed with tiny 2 triangles (underneath the word Government) on the back.

September 4, 2011 - Vanuatu 10,000 Vatu Polymer. This is the highest denomination of banknote currently circulating in Vanuatu. This note was issued in 2010 to commemorate the country 30th year of Independence from the British and French (30.07.1980). This note displayed here is a 2-Uncut sheet.

September 1, 2011 - A complete set of Cayman Islands notes all dated 1998. Whilst a full set of Cayman Islands notes usually comprises of $1, $5, $10, $25, $50 and $100, the $50 denomination note was not printed for this series. Four of the notes posted here are all with matching serial number. All these notes were acquired from a seller in Cayman Islands. The Cayman Islands currency is one of the strongest currency in the world. It's currency value is more or less pegged to the USD approximately at KYD1=USD1.25 or USD1=KYD0.80. No wonder the KY currency is so expensive to acquire.

August 2011 Postings

August 26, 2011 - Brunei BR1 (P22). Since the released of the BR1 in 1996, only two reprints have been issued, in 2007 and 2008. It appears that a large quantity of these were initially printed in 1996. Given the recent release of the new BR1 note "D" Series (together with the BR5 and BR10), I believe this 2008 could be the last print of this "C" series.

August 23, 2011 - Nothing special here. I have added the Singapore $5 polymer note to the post. This S$5 note was issued recently and it has a tiny little dot on the back, just under the words - Garden City. Five denominations have been released with a single dot on the back of the note. These are the $2, $5 and $10, all polymer, and the other two are the $50 and $100, both paper notes.

August 19, 2011 - Cayman Islands 1996 prints. Here I have posted 3 notes with denominations of $1, $25 and $100. This series was printed with prefix of B over 1. Missing are the $5 and $10 notes. The $50 note was not printed for this series.

August 15, 2011 - Hungary 500 and 2000 Forint. Both notes are dated 2008. The Forint currency was first introduced on 1.8.1946. Hungary became a member of the European Union in 2004 but still issuing it's own currency. I am sure won't be long, it will too be converted from Forint into Euro. The expected date of conversion, the earliest, is in 2020.

August 10, 2011 - Gibraltar 100 Pounds. This is a Hybrid note and is dated 1.1.2011. This note was released for circulation on 11.5.2011. This is the highest denomination banknote currently in circulation in the tiny British colony of Gibraltar. In 2010, Gibraltar issued a new series of banknotes with denomination of 10 and 50 pounds. In May, it released the rest of the series with the 5, 20 and 100 Pounds. All notes issued with letter prefix of A/AA.

August 6, 2011 - Once again the Australia (20)10 prints are out. For 2010, only three denominations are printed, $20, $50 and $100. All notes are signed by the Governor Glen Stevens and Dr Ken Henry, the Secretary to the Treasury. It should be noted that Dr Ken Henry resigned from the Treasury in February 2011 and has been replaced by Martin Parkinson. Needless to say, we expect his new signature to be on the notes printed for 2011, if any, are scheduled to be released next year.

August 3, 2011 - Guinea 2006 to 2008. Four notes of 500, 1000, 5000 and 10000 Francs. All notes uncirculated. A very colourful set.

August 1, 2011 - Singapore $50 (P5b) and $100 (6a). I received these two notes few days ago from Singapore, and I thought I posted them here and share it with my viewers. There is a story to tell on these two notes. These notes came from a customer of a bank, who just wanted to exchange them to current currency. Total amount exchanged was about S$1,000 and I managed to get hold of $250 worth of notes ($50 x 1 and $100 x 2) via a close source at face value. The condition of these two notes are still very good. Both notes have a very light and soft fold in the center but no graffiti. Such fold for circulated notes is expected given that these are fairly large size notes. These notes are very beautiful designed and full credit to the designer(s). I understand that they are still plenty of these Orchard notes available in Singapore but it's fun getting them this way. Thank you for reading this story. I hope you have similar good stories to tell too. By the way, I have yet to pay for these notes. IOU is just fine!

July 2011 Postings

*Latest Postings*

July 26, 2011 - Netherlands Antilles 5 Gulden P15b. This note was issued in 1984. I somehow have very little luck in getting banknotes from that part of the world!

July 23, 2011 - Hungary 500 Forint PNL. According to my old SCWPM, this note was not listed yet. This is currently the lowest denomination issued by the Hungarian government. I enjoy collecting European banknotes with the exception of Euro, mainly due to it's value. With EU ever expending, eventually more and more countries will convert their national icon into Euro, and I though it's better to get some before it's too late. More Hungarian notes to come later.

July 20, 2011 - Sri Lanka 2006 Prints. Here I have updated few missing 2006 notes. However I believe that I am still missing the 500 Rupee piece. These notes are now been replaced by the recent 2011 new issue.

July 15, 2011 - Australia $10 Commemorative P49a. This is the world first polymer note commemorative issued in 1988 to celebrate the 200th years of European settlement in Australia. This is an uncut strip of 4 with selvedge and only 1,673 of the strip of 4 were issued to the public and the note is dated 26.1.1988, which is also a public holiday (Australia Day). Unfortunately as my scanner is not large enough, I can only scan the sheet showing 3 1/2 of the notes. Apart from this, it also released a block of 4 for the same note too. This note is now 23 years old! As far as the single note is concerned, they are plenty available in the market, especially in UNC condition.

July 10, 2011 - Scotland, Bank of Scotland. This is a ten pounds note with date 18.6.2001 (P120d). This note is signed by John Shaw, the Bank's Governor and George Mitchell, Treasurer and Managing Director. The letter prefix of this note is EU, which is also the last prefix of this 2001 series.

July 8, 2011 - Dominican Republic. This is a 20 Peso Oro specimen polymer note. This note is dated 2009 and was released to the public for circulation on 1.7.2010. This note depicts General Gregoria Luperon in full military uniform. General Gregoria was the 20th President of the Dominican Republic and was in power between 1879 to 1880 (less than a year). He died in 1897.

July 3, 2011 - Philippines - 200 Piso commemorating the 400th Anniversary of University of Santo Tomas 1611-2011. 10 million notes issued, as well as 400 sheets of 2 Uncut, medallion and postage stamps too. The commemorative note issued is the same design as the previous 200 piso note (not those new notes announced in December 2010) and it features the Quadricentennial logo (tongues of fire forming the letters U, S and T emanating from the Main Building) on the dorsal portion. The University of Santo Tomas is the oldest university in the Philippines and was established on 28.4.1611 by the archbishop of Manila Muguel de Benarides. The UST is situated at Sampaloc, Manila, The Philippines. This note was released on 21.1.2011.

July 1, 2011 - Barbados, a complete set of 2007 notes from $2 to $100 all signed by Governor Dr Marion Williams. All notes are dated 1.5.2007 and the SCWPM references are from P66a to P71a. Nothing much has changed since the designs of these notes were first issued in the 70s. Whilst these notes are still circulating in the country, the $2, $5 and $10 have now been replaced by the Governor's signature Dr Delisle Worrell, and won't be long, we hope to see the rest of the series for Dr Worrell too.

June 25, 2011 - Bhutan 500 Ngultrum. Another commemorative note released in 1994. This note celebrates the National Day of Bhutan. A nice mystical note for my own collection.

June 17, 2011 - Iran 5000 Rials. This is a Commemorative note issued in 2009 to celebrate the country great achievements in Space. As expected, the design on the back of this note is space related, with the picture of the OMID satellite orbiting the earth.

June 13, 2011 - Barbados $100. This note was issued in 2001 and signed by the Governor Dr Marion Williams. This note is has a reference no of P65 in the SCWPM.Unbelievable that this note is listed at US$125 value!

The first note issued by the Banks was the $1000 and was released on 7.12.2010. These $500 notes were released on 22.2.2011. The remaining series, mainly the $20, $50 and $100 will be released later.

June 7, 2011 - Swaziland 100 Emelanheni. This is a hybrid note. Whilst most hybrid notes come with a see-through window, this note is manufactured with a thin layer of protective film laminated coating on the paper note. Because of this, the note also looks a bit glossy too. This note is dated 6.9.2010 and was released for circulation on 1.11.2010.

June 4, 2011 - Barbados $20 1999 P57. Nothing much has changed on the design of this note since it was first introduced in the early 70s, except with some additional security features and minor alterations added since then. Perhaps it's time to replace them with a newer designs. This note was signed by the Governor Dr Winston Cox. More Barbados notes to come later.

June 1, 2011 - East Caribbean States full set. This is a complete set of notes from $5 to $100 issued in 2008 (P47-51) by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank. These notes are circulating in the tiny nations of Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St Christopher & Nevis, St Lucia and St Vincent and The Grenadines with a combined population of 640,000 (est.). Up to 2008, East Caribbean notes were issued with a letter suffix to represent where the notes were printed for. Since then, they have do away with this. To some, this is an excellent move as it makes our collection much easier, after all there are no shortage of banknotes to collect around the world. However to others, this means less challenging for those who likes to hunt the entire series for their collection. For me I have no complaint!
